The Mannequin Collective
I was at the Santa Monica farmer’s market stocking up on kale and apples last Saturday and noticed that there was an huge amount of people, even for a perfect sunny day on the Promenade. An then I realized, duh! It was the grand opening weekend for one of LA biggest new shopping destinations, Santa Monica Place! Of course I went to check it out, even though I wasn’t in the mood for hardcore shopping.
The 3rd Street Promenade, plus the new mall complex, make that area of Santa Monica an insane shopping destination. Really over the top with almost every store you could imagine (including a huge Kitson, if only they had brought Topshop – sigh), and it’s just a stroll down to the beach and the boardwalk (and the Ferris Wheel – heeee – my favorite).
One of the pleasant surprises of my non-shopping trip to the Santa Monica Place, was a groovy exhibit in the courtyard in front of Bloomingdale’s called The Mannequin Collective. Basically 100 artists, designers, creative types, etc. took a blank mannequin canvas and decked it out to their hearts content. Many artists used found material and recycled objects. Below are some of my favorites…

[I love the bear mask on the back of the head]
This one is my favorite! [Of course I am partial to swim
] It is titled Our Lady of the L.A. River by Kim Karisrud & Danny Phillips [Otis alumni]. Plastic remnants were collected from the L.A. River and were “transformed to reveal the latent hope for its cultural and ecological future.” Nice use of recycled material and context!
Love this flapper look created out of KCRW stickers! Way to keep it LA centric – love that.

Go see the gallery of all the creations on LAMag.com.
